研究者將大鼠放在兩種不同類型的背景中記錄海馬神經(jīng)元（hippocampal neuron）的記憶活動(dòng)：不同的位置，相同的記錄槽（recording chamber）；相同的位置，不同的記錄槽。當(dāng)信號(hào)（cue）改變，但是位置不變時(shí)，細(xì)胞的放電速率（firing rate）表現(xiàn)出大小差異，但在空間選擇性上則是相同的。當(dāng)位置改變，信號(hào)不變時(shí)，神經(jīng)元的放電速率和空間選擇性都發(fā)生了改變。這些獨(dú)立的編碼方案使得海馬區(qū)既可以編碼空間上的記憶，也可以編碼片斷式的記憶。
