A cheese fondue is usually made with Swiss and maybe cheddar cheese, and mixed with either wine or beer. Soft cheeses sometimes pose a health problem, especially during pregnancy. This is due to the fact that Listeria monocytogenes , a bacterium found in soft cheeses, can cause serious illness and foetal death. Some studies have implicated feta, Brie, Camembert, and blue-veined cheeses such as Roquefort, but no problems have been found with hard cheeses (cheddar, Swiss). Since cheese fondue is made from hard cheeses, and is heated before eating, there is no risk associated with its consumption. It can be eaten during pregnancy.
